The Sapling upgrade needed an elliptic curve cheap enough to run inside a zero‑knowledge proof. Zcash built one and called it Jubjub. Daira‑Emma Hopwood, the spec’s lead author, added the hat, and the bird took its place on the cover of the Zcash Protocol Specification.
